A court in Equatorial Guinea sentenced a top official, Baltasar Ebang Engonga, to eight years in prison for embezzlement on Wednesday.
He is also infamous for appearing in a series of sex tapes with the wives of other officials.
He was convicted by the Bioko provincial tribunal of diverting money billed as professional travel expenses for personal use, according to supreme court press director Hilario Mitogo, who told reporters over WhatsApp.
Engonga, the married former head of the national financial investigation agency, and five other senior officials have been accused of embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars in the oil-rich central African state.
Engonga, nicknamed “Bello”, made international headlines in November with sex tapes, some of which were filmed in his office at the finance ministry and shared on social media while he was detained pending the embezzlement investigation.
The clips sparked a flurry of online parodies, including songs, dances, and posts about a mock virility medicine called “Balthazariem”.
According to Mitogo, the provincial court sentenced Engonga to eight years and a $220,000 fine.
