As Christmas approaches, the Primate of All Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Rev Henry Ndukuba, has called on Christians to celebrate modestly and avoid unnecessary travel amid the country’s economic strain and security concerns.
Speaking at the 2025 Carnival for Christ in Abuja, Ndukuba urged Nigerians to resist the pressure of festive overspending. He reminded worshippers that responsibilities such as rent and school fees await in January, stressing the need for prudent budgeting.
“Don’t spend all you have just to celebrate Christmas. If you have much, eat; if you don’t have, enjoy what you have,” he said, encouraging citizens to adopt wiser financial habits during these challenging times.
The Primate also warned against risky travel as security concerns linger across the country, advising those with health issues to prioritise rest. “Let us be as wise as serpents and innocent as doves. These are delicate times,” he added.
Despite the hardships, Ndukuba expressed optimism that Nigeria will overcome its economic and security troubles. He praised the efforts of the federal government and security agencies, while urging families not to lose hope. “God still has so much in store for us. Let no one give up,”he said.
Explaining the theme of this year’s Carnival for Christ, Break Up Your Fallow Ground, he encouraged Nigerians to identify neglected areas of their spiritual, family, and economic lives that could yield progress if properly tended. Greater discipline, trust, and respect for human life, he said, would help reduce the country’s crises and open doors to growth.
In his sermon, guest speaker and Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Afikpo, Rt Rev Paul Udogu, said Nigeria must seek God’s face in this critical season.
He urged Christians to celebrate Christ’s death and resurrection by showing love to all, regardless of religious differences.
