Professor Pat Utomi has used Nigeria’s Democracy Day to urge for a deeper reflection on the country’s leadership, referring to some politicians as “thugs and tropical gangsters”. President Donald Trump’s attorneys argued on Wednesday that the appeal over his felony conviction in New York should be moved to federal court because the case related to official acts as president, while the state said it was too late to make the change. Trump was convicted in May of lying about a hush-money payment to adult-film star Stormy Daniels, and he appealed. President Bola Tinubu has stated that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will welcome the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, if he decides to join the party. The Court of Appeal in Abuja has struck out two motions filed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and awarded a cost of ₦100,000 against him in favour of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. A three-member panel, led by Justice Hamman Barka, delivered the ruling on May 21, 2025, after Akpabio applied to withdraw the motions. The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has begun investigations into the circumstances behind the death of one of its personnel attached to its Bauchi Command, Corporal A. S. Wulumba. The officer allegedly died while being confined to a guardroom after being detained for arriving late to his duty station. According to sources, Numdarai Wulumba, his sister, was notified by her brother on May 4, 2025, that he had been jailed.
