Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has faced criticism for referring to the new Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, as “my dear brother” in his congratulations message to the traditional ruler. Obi, in a statement released on X (previously Twitter) on Saturday to congratulate the monarch on his ascension to the throne, “I warmly congratulate my dear brother, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, Arusa I, on his installation as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland. “His ascension to this revered throne is a celebration for the people of Ibadan and a source of pride for the entire Yoruba nation and…
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery is facing a major labor crisis following the order by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) for its members across seven oil and gas firms to halt all crude oil and gas supplies to the massive facility. The refinery, on the other hand, condemned the command, describing it as criminal, lawless, and economic sabotage. The layoff of 800 workers, according to the union, occurred after they exercised their constitutional right to join PENGASSAN. The union said that the refinery flew in illegal Indian expats to work in Nigeria’s sensitive energy industry.…
Brighton came from behind to defeat an ill-disciplined Chelsea side that saw a player sent off for the second Saturday in a row. Substitutes Danny Welbeck and Maxim de Cuyper scored within 11 minutes of added time as the visitors capitalized on Trevoh Chalobah’s 53rd-minute red card. The Blues had been coasting to victory in the first half when Enzo Fernandez headed in Reece James’s cross, following a deflection from Brighton winger Kaoru Mitoma. However, Mitoma played a key role in the game’s big turning point, as he won possession from Chelsea’s Andrey Santos on his first Premier League start,…
Erling Haaland scored twice late on, while Maxime Esteve scored two own goals, leading Manchester City to a resounding Premier League victory over Burnley. Pep Guardiola’s side was questioned after losing back-to-back games in August, but they reacted by winning three and drawing one to regain form and rise to fourth place in the table. They received a significant assist from French defender Esteve, who scored the first of his unfortunate double by miscuing an attempted clearance into his own net, following Jeremy Doku’s low effort being pushed out by Martin Dubravka. The contest was under City’s jurisdiction. Belgium winger…
Crystal Palace’s growing reputation expanded to Selhurst Park’s “Holmesdale Fanatics” when they witnessed Liverpool’s flaws being cruelly exposed this season. The Eagles had taken the visitors apart for 34 minutes, with only an Ismaila Sarr goal to show for their dominance, when the club’s famed section of support delivered their verdict. “We’re going to win the league” resonated around this grand old atmospheric stadium, perhaps exaggeratedly, but it was a strong indication of how outstanding this Palace team is. Liverpool have been on the verge of disaster all season, despite winning five consecutive Premier League games, with an influx of…
For the first time in nearly 75 years, Atletico Madrid came from behind to defeat city rivals Real Madrid, scoring five goals in a thrilling derby. It was only the fourth time Atletico had scored at least five goals in a Madrid derby, the last being in November 1950 with a 6-3 triumph. Real Madrid lost for the first time this season after winning all six of their La Liga games and their Champions League opening, a 2-1 triumph against Marseille. Real have not conceded as many goals in La Liga since October 2018, when they were defeated 5-1 by…
The Labour Party has issued a statement following the alleged physical assault of its National Chairman, Julius Abure, by a woman identified as Precious Oruche, also known as Mama P, at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. The event, which occurred on Friday, has prompted the party leadership to accuse “anti-democratic elements” of organizing the assault. According to a statement signed by the Labour Party’s spokesperson, Obiora Ifoh, Abure was calmly waiting in line to board a Max Air aircraft to Benin when Mama P unexpectedly attacked him. Ifoh claimed she maintained the confrontation onboard, despite appeals from flight attendants to…
The Delta State Government has sacked and demoted several health workers found guilty of extorting money from pregnant women and children under five, despite the state’s free healthcare policy for these groups. Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, the State Commissioner for Health, made the announcement on Saturday during the launch of the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation and Initiatives Project Action Plan in Ashaka, Ndokwa East Local Government Area. He stated that the government had increased surveillance of hospitals to ensure that monies released for maternal and child healthcare were properly used. “Health workers in the state have done well, but…
Manchester suffered a humiliating 3-1 defeat to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday. Brazilian forward Igor Thiago was the star of the show, netting twice in the opening 20 minutes. Thiago broke the deadlock in the 8th minute, timing his run perfectly to beat the offside trap before calmly finishing past Altay Bayindir. Twelve minutes later, he tapped in a rebound to make it 2-0. The Red Devils briefly sparked hope in the 26th minute when Benjamin Šeško pulled one back after a scramble in the Brentford box. The 71st minute was the pivotal moment. After Bryan Mbeumo…
Thousands of women of Enugwu-Agidi in the Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Friday, protested over what they termed land grabbing and high-handedness by the President-General of the community, Ebuka Onuorah. The demonstrators, largely elderly and middle-aged women, brandished placards and sang protest songs, urging the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, to look into Onuorah’s activities. They warned that if not stopped, the development might devastate the village. The dissatisfied women marched around the community, singing and making unprintable insults about Onuora. They pledged to oppose any attempt by the government or its agents to deprive their children…
