Court jails 11 over Internet fraud in Edo

An Upper Area Court in Gwagwalada, FCT, on Monday sentenced a 38-year-old man, Danjuma Yaro, to 10 months imprisonment for selling a fake plot of land. The convict, who resides in Pasali village, Kuje, FCT, was charged with criminal breach of trust and cheating after selling the land for N1.5 million. The Judge, Sani Umar, in his ruling sentenced the convict after he pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency. Russia warns Sweden, Finland Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov

Russia has warned Finland and Sweden against joining Nato, arguing the move would not bring stability to Europe. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that “the alliance remains a tool geared towards confrontation”. It comes as US defence officials said Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine has been a “massive strategic blunder” which is likely to bring Nato enlargement. Rotimi Amaechi, Minister of Transportation and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has joined the 2023 presidential race. Amaechi, who had in the past denied interest in the presidential race has since made a U-turn. Will Smith has been banned from the Oscars gala and other Academy events for 10 years after the US actor slapped comic Chris Rock at the ceremony. In a statement, the Academy said the 94th Oscars had been “overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behaviour we saw Mr Smith exhibit on stage”. Gunmen invaded the residence of Plateau State Commissioner of Environment, Usman Bamaiyi, in the wee hours of Saturday, abducting his wife and daughter. It’s unclear if the commissioner was at home when the armed gang stormed the house in Gindiri community of Mangu Local Government Area of the state. Billionaire Obi Cubana has surprised some of his classmates at Dennis Memorial Grammar School Onitsha, with a donation of N40m to be shared by 20 of the struggling mates. Obi Cubana, whose real name is Chief Obinna Iyiegbu, made the donation on Friday as he hosted his class 92 for a reunion in Abuja. The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, on Friday unveiled a new uniform for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), adding to the agency’s array of uniforms. The UK has imposed sanctions on Vladimir Putin’s two adult daughters in another symbolic move to put pressure on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine. Katerina Tikhonova and Maria Vorontsova will be subject to an asset freeze and a travel ban, although it is not clear whether either of them has ever visited the UK or whether they own any assets within reach of UK officials.
