Arsenal eventually saw off a stubborn Brighton to move back to the top of the Premier League, where they remained after Liverpool were held to a goalless draw by Manchester United. The Gunners, now a point clear at the summit, claimed their success thanks to Gabriel Jesus’ header and Kai Havertz’s late strike. Mikel Arteta’s side dominated the first half against Brighton without reward, but the tension eased when Jesus turned in after a corner. The hosts were almost punished when Pascal Gross poked a golden chance wide before Havertz sealed victory to spark joyous celebrations at a relieved Emirates…
Manchester United lifted the mood of crisis around manager Erik ten Hag by securing a battling point against Liverpool at Anfield. In a mediocre encounter, United stopped the rot that had been spreading after the heavy home loss to Bournemouth and a tame Champions League exit rubber-stamped by Bayern Munich at Old Trafford. While this was hardly a classic display from injury-hit United, who had Diogo Dalot sent off for dissent in stoppage time, Ten Hag had cause to be much happier than Jurgen Klopp, whose side missed a chance to return to the top of the Premier League. Man…
Former Nigeria’s Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, has given four conditions to be worked upon to realise climate-positive growth and create a green industrial region of the world, the first being for African countries to focus their economic growth and development plans on green opportunities. He said in a broader view that out of the four necessary things to adopt, two are what the African countries can and should work on, and the other two require global partnership and engagement. Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who is the global advisor of the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), an international…
The Socio-Economic and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) “over the failure to arrest and prosecute suspected perpetrators of grave electoral offences in the recently concluded off-cycle governorship elections in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa states.” In the suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/1694/2023 filed last Friday at the Federal High Court in Abuja, SERAP is seeking “an order of mandamus to direct and compel INEC to probe the allegations of electoral offences, including electoral violence, in the off-cycle governorship elections in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa states.” SERAP is seeking “an order of mandamus to compel…
The Guinness World Records has awarded a distinction to Victor Oche Odeh, a 7-year-old boy who has now been recognized as the youngest fraudster in the world. This embarrassing acknowledgment follows his recent conviction by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on June 26. Victor, alongside four other undergraduates, Chidebere Stanley Opara, Manasseh Sefa Ephraim, Chukwukere Obinna Paul, and Enyogu Etim Ekpo, has been found guilty on separate one-count charges related to internet fraud. The Kaduna Zonal Command of the EFCC was responsible for securing the convictions, and Justice Darius Khobo of the Kaduna State High Court presided over…
The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) said on Saturday that it has paid more than N1.7 billion in claims to insured depositors of failed institutions from recovered debts. Bello Hassan, managing director and chief executive, disclosed this at its 2023 Editors’ Forum in Lagos. He said the corporation invigorated its recovery efforts, which led to a substantial recovery of debt from banks in liquidation. “That is why we were able to declare liquidation dividends for those banks,” he said. Hassan said, “Sometimes early in May 2023, we advertised that we wanted to pay liquidation dividends to depositors, creditors in some…
Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia helped Napoli get a 2-1 home win against lowly Cagliari in Serie A on Saturday. Napoli now moves provisionally up to fourth in the standings. The African Footballer of the Year broke the deadlock for the hosts in the 69th minute after Cagliari keeper Simone Scuffet deflected his header on to the post and saw the ball bounce into the net as a result. Cagliari forward Leonardo Pavoletti equalized three minutes later from close range, but Kvaratskhelia restored the lead for Napoli after Osimhen superbly controlled the ball to tee him up 15 minutes from…
The German Football League (DFL) is aiming to net up to a billion euros by selling a stake in media rights next year, but it received an unwanted windfall on Friday when disgruntled fans threw chocolate coins to force a stoppage in a Bundesliga match. Germany’s first and second league soccer clubs voted this week to allow an investor to take a stake in the media rights firm, as leagues in Europe increasingly consider broadcasting arrangements as a way to boost revenue and increase their global reach. The DFL has said it aims to conclude an agreement worth between 900…
The World Bank’s fund for poor countries plans to provide a credit of $750 million for clean energy projects in Nigeria. The fund was released to increase electricity in Africa’s most populous nation, the International Development Association disclosed, as Reuters reported on Friday. The World Bank said that more than 85 million people lacked access to electricity in Nigeria as of 2021, with households and businesses reliant on expensive diesel and petrol generators. It stated that the International Development Association will fund the Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES) project, which will give more than 17.5 million Nigerians access…
Ten-man Tottenham condemned Nottingham Forest to a fifth Premier League defeat in six games as they underlined their top-four ambitions at the City Ground. Richarlison’s third goal in two games set Spurs on their way, with the outstanding Dejan Kulusevski sealing victory for Ange Postecoglou’s side, which had Yves Bissouma sent off in the 70th minute. The result moves fifth-placed Tottenham level on points with Manchester City, although the champions have played a game less. Forest sits 16th in the table, five points clear of the bottom three. Spurs controlled much of the first period and deservedly went ahead on…
