Arsenal began their Premier League campaign with a 2-0 win over Wolves at the Emirates as goals in either half from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka got Mikel Arteta’s side off to the ideal start in their quest to end a 21-year wait for the title. Though comfortable in the end, the result had looked in the balance for a period in the second half when the visitors had chances to peg Arsenal back and wipe out the lead given to them after 25 minutes by Havertz’s close-range header. Wolves’ Matheus Cunha had a golden opportunity to level from a…
Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah scored the goals as Arne Slot’s reign as Liverpool head coach began with a hard-fought victory over newly promoted Ipswich Town at a boisterous Portman Road. Portuguese forward Jota finished off a flowing Liverpool move involving Salah and the impressive Trent Alexander-Arnold shortly after the hour mark, side-footing the Egyptian’s low cross past Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton. And it was 2-0 just five minutes later, Salah finishing Dominik Szoboszlai’s pass for his ninth opening-day goal – a Premier League record. Playing their first top-flight game in 22 years, Ipswich were more than a match for…
Mohamed Salah set a new Premier League record by scoring in Liverpool’s 2024-25 opener against Ipswich Town. Salah’s goal at Portman Road was his ninth on the first day of an English top-flight season moving him clear of Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer on the list of the Premier League’s most prolific opening-day marksmen. Saturday game is the 350th appearance of Salah’s incredible Reds career and marks the start of his eighth season with the club. His 65th-minute strike put Liverpool 2-0 up over Ipswich soon after Diogo Jota had opened the scoring. His first came on his…
A former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on the federal government of Nigeria to declare war against insecurity following incessant reports of kidnapping sweeping across the country. In a statement on X.com on Saturday, Obi wrote, “When I say we should declare war on the economy, power, and insecurity, some people spin the narrative, while others complain. But what else can we do? “In the last 24 hours, several people have been kidnapped across Nigeria, including about 20 dental students from Maiduguri and Jos in Benue State. “An Anambra State Commissioner and his wife were abducted in…
United States President Joe Biden has warned all sides involved in the negotiations for a possible Gaza ceasefire deal not to undermine efforts. Biden declared that “we are closer than we’ve ever been” to a ceasefire following the latest round of negotiations, but a senior Hamas official expressed scepticism. The president also announced he was sending Secretary of State Antony Blinken to Israel to continue the “intensive efforts to conclude this agreement”. His comments come following a joint statement by the US, Qatar and Egypt – stating that they had presented a proposal for a ceasefire and hostage release deal…
A charter plane carrying the Republican candidate for vice-president, JD Vance, was forced to make an emergency landing after a door malfunction on Friday. The Boeing 737 had departed from an airport in Milwaukee, where the Ohio senator was attending a campaign event with police officers, and had to turn back for repairs shortly after take-off. After being fixed, the plane continued on to Cincinnati, where Vance lives. Last week, former President Donald Trump was forced to divert course and make an emergency landing as he flew to a rally in Montana. Vance was travelling with his wife Usha, his…
Bournemouth have completed the signing of Brazilian striker Evanilson from Porto in a club record £40.2m deal. Evanilson, 24, scored 60 goals in 154 appearances for Porto during his four years in Portugal. The Cherries will pay an initial fee of £31.7m with the potential for another £8.5m on top, should certain clauses be met, making him their most expensive buy. Bournemouth chief executive Neill Blake said: “Evanilson is a hugely sought-after striker and for us to bring him to the club in a record-breaking deal shows our ambition and intent. “Having scored 25 goals last season, including goals in…
Former US President, Donald Trump said the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which honors civilians, “is actually much better” than the Medal of Honor, because service members who receive the nation’s highest military decoration are often wounded or awarded it posthumously. Trump was praising Republican mega donor Miriam Adelson, whom he awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom while in office, during remarks at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. “Miriam, I watched (Sheldon Adelson, her late husband) sitting so proud in the White House when we gave Miriam the Presidential Medal of Freedom. That’s the highest award you can get…
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) recommended vaccination for travellers heading to mpox-infected areas due to the disease’s ability to spread through close contact. ECDC stated that it has updated its recommendations in response to outbreaks of a new strain of the virus. Other continents, including Europe, can expect some cases too. ECDC said the risk of it spreading everywhere is low, despite the World Health Organization (WHO) recently declaring the mpox situation a global emergency. The disease, formally known as monkeypox can be passed on by close contact with anyone with the infection. Those who have…

Odobert will wear shirt number 28, the club said in a statement. Spurs begin their Premier League…
