Bolivia claimed their second win in the South American World Cup qualifiers on Thursday with a 4-0 home victory over Venezuela on their first match at one of the world’s highest altitude stadiums. Some 20,000 fans gathered at the Municipal de El Alto stadium at 4,150 metres above sea level and 550 metres above the Hernando Siles stadium in La Paz, where Bolivia usually host international games. “La Verde” made the most of their home advantage to earn newly-appointed coach Oscar Villegas his first triumph at the helm in a match that broke the altitude record for an international fixture.…
San Marino made history by winning a competitive match for the first time with victory against Liechtenstein in the Nations League. With the victory, the world’s lowest ranked team by Fifa also ended the longest winless run in football, stretching back two decades and 140 games to when they won a friendly back in 2004 – also against Liechtenstein and by the same scoreline. It is only their second ever victory. The decisive goal on Thursday was scored by 19-year-old Nicko Sensoli, who plays in the Italian fourth tier. The teenager struck in the 53rd minute, lobbing goalkeeper Benjamin Buchel…
Argentina claimed a 3-0 home win over Chile on Thursday thanks to second-half goals from Alexis Mac Allister, Julian Alvarez and Paulo Dybala, to strengthen their grip on top of the South American World Cup qualifying. The Copa America champions looked dominant and untroubled by the absence of talismans Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria, who received a tribute at the Monumental stadium after his international retirement. Argentina opened the scoring three minutes after the break, when Liverpool midfielder Mac Allister sent the ball into the net first-time off a cross from Alvarez, who also got on the scoresheet with…
An added-time goal from substitute Felicio Milson gave Angola a shock 1-0 victory over Ghana in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier in Kumasi on Thursday. When the Black Stars failed to clear a low cross, the visitors pounced with Serbia-based Milson pushing the ball past goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi from close range on 93 minutes. Home supporters hurled dozens of plastic bottles onto the pitch after the final whistle to express their anger at the Group F matchday one result. It was the first loss suffered by four-time African champions Ghana at the Baba Yara Stadium since 2000.…
Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score 900 top-level career goals as Portugal kicked off their Nations League campaign with victory over Croatia. The 39-year-old volleyed in from the edge of the six-yard box in the 34th minute to double Portugal’s lead from Nuno Mendes’ deep cross. It was a record-extending 131st goal for Portugal, coming 20 years after his first, and the veteran sank to his knees in an emotional celebration. Manchester United full-back Diogo Dalot had put Portugal ahead early on but later turned the ball into his own net as Croatia responded before the break. As…
Burkina Faso has introduced a new biometric passport without the logo of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), further solidifying its break from the regional bloc. The move comes after Burkina Faso, along with Niger and Mali, severed ties with ECOWAS following military coups in the three countries. The decision to issue passports without the ECOWAS insignia was announced by Burkina Faso’s Security Minister, Mahamadou Sana, on Tuesday. Sana stated, “This passport does not feature the ECOWAS logo or any mention of ECOWAS. Since January, Burkina Faso has decided to withdraw from this body, and this is simply…

Ronaldo, who has won the award five times, also failed to receive a nomination last year, while Messi, who won for a record eighth time in 2023 and has been nominated 16 times, misses out despite Copa America win…
