The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that escalating instability across Northern Nigeria, including a surge in violent attacks, could push nearly 35 million people into severe food insecurity during the 2026 lean season — the highest figure ever recorded in the country. The UN highlighted attacks by insurgent groups in Nigeria, including Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaeda affiliate; the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP); and the group’s expanding influence across the Sahel,…
The Government of Canada has issued a new advisory urging citizens to avoid all non-essential travel to Nigeria, including the capital city, Abuja, citing an increasingly unpredictable security environment marked by terrorism, crime, armed attacks, and kidnappings. The Canadian government released one of its biggest travel-risk updates in years, warning citizens to steer clear of 17 African countries because of spiralling insecurity, political turmoil, and extremist violence. Canadian officials point to a perfect storm of threats: expanding extremist networks in the Sahel and Horn of Africa, a wave of military coups, communal clashes, mass protests, cross-border crime, and fragile governance…
Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Idris Wase, on Wednesday alleged that the names of Boko Haram members were once discovered on the Nigerian Army recruitment list, warning that such infiltration is undermining the country’s security architecture. Speaking during a special plenary session of the House convened to review the national security situation, Wase said former Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Muktar Betara, could confirm the incident. He said the development reflects deep flaws in Nigeria’s recruitment processes, which have allowed individuals with criminal backgrounds to enter sensitive security institutions. Wase, who revealed that he lost…

The Federal Government has debunked widespread media reports claiming that open grazing has been banned nationwide, clarifying that it is instead implementing a gradual transition to modern ranching systems. The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, made the clarification yesterday, stating that no policy banning open grazing had been announced by the government. He emphasised that the current strategy involved utilising and upgrading Nigeria’s vast existing grazing reserves. “The government is instead implementing a gradual, well-structured transition from open grazing to modern ranching systems. “Pastoralists, like every other economic group, require a structured business environment,” Maiha said.
