Burkina Faso army Captain Ibrahim Traore has ousted military leader Paul-Henri Damiba and dissolved the government in the West African country’s second coup in eight months, he said in a statement read on national television on Friday evening. Traore said a group of officers who helped Damiba seize power in January, had decided to remove their leader due to his inability to deal with a worsening Islamist insurgency. About 20 members of a Jewish sect held at a facility in Mexico after a police raid on their jungle base have fled. Footage showed men, women, and children streaming out of the site in Huixtla, in the west, on Wednesday night. They had been there since the raid last Friday when two members were arrested on suspicion of human trafficking and serious sexual offences. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) says it is collaborating with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct free, fair and credible elections in 2023. Matthew Alao, UNDP Team Lead, Governance, Peace and Security, disclosed this at the opening of a two-day training organised by the UN body in Port Harcourt on Friday.
