Liverpool reduced leaders Manchester City’s advantage to three points as victory at Brighton extended their Premier League winning run to eight games. Luis Diaz continued the fine start to his Liverpool career as he raced on to Joel Matip’s superb pass and headed past the onrushing Robert Sanchez after 19 minutes. The Brighton goalkeeper was fortunate not to receive any punishment as he clattered into the Colombian forward, whose celebrations were put on hold as he received treatment following the high challenge. Mohamed Salah sealed the three points with a second-half penalty awarded after a handball by Yves Bissouma -…
The Premier League has disqualified Roman Abramovich as a director of Chelsea after the oligarch was sanctioned by the UK government. Abramovich had his British assets – including Chelsea – frozen on Thursday as part of the government’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The move put the Russian’s prospective sale of the club on hold. The Premier League said Abramovich’s disqualification would “not impact on the club’s ability to train and play”. Removing an owner from a board would usually trigger the sale of the shares, a process that Abramovich had instigated on 2 March after after the threat…
By Femi Onakanren The All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2015 did the unprecedented in Nigeria’s political landscape; the party wrestled the Presidency from the incumbent PDP led administration. It consolidated its win in 2015 with a repeat in 2019. John Odigie Oyegun (elected Executive Governor of Edo State in the aborted 3rd Republic) served as the first national chairman of the party. He was succeeded by Adams Oshiomole (incidentally also a former Governor). Both were removed under acrimonious circumstances which threatened the party’s continued corporate existence. A Caretaker committee, the CECPC, led by Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State,…
Says 2022 year of consolidation for APC The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan said on Thursday that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should rather go round Nigeria between now and 2023 polls to ask for forgiveness over past failures and should not bother asking Nigerians for votes. Lawan said the 16 years of PDP in power created so much damage that would only require them to seek forgiveness from the people and not their votes. The Senate President said 2022 is a year of consolidation for APC administration in the light of the legion of ongoing projects which would…

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is forcing Europe to diversify its energy supply by looking to buy gas from African countries like Nigeria, Algeria and Egypt. “Germany and Europe must now quickly make up for what they have missed over the last 20 years,” Stefan Liebing, chairperson of the German-African Business Association, said in a recent press release. He advised Germany’s Economy Minister Robert Habeck to travel to African countries such as Algeria, Nigeria, Egypt and Angola, which could help free Europe from its dependence on Russian gas. Algeria is the 10th-largest gas producer globally. Cargoes of liquefied natural gas —…
Chelsea’s credit card facilities have been temporarily suspended while banks assess the implications of sanctions imposed on Russian billionaire owner Roman Abramovich. The club has been given a special licence to operate despite Abramovich having his assets frozen by the UK government. Banks want to assess the licence criteria to ensure it does not breach the government’s sanctions and Chelsea do not know when the suspension will be lifted. As part of the licence terms, Chelsea cannot receive money for match tickets which have not already been sold, future gate receipts for FA Cup games or merchandise from the club…
President Vladimir Putin of Russia has called for foreign volunteers to be able to fight against Ukrainian forces. Speaking at a Russian security council meeting, he said those who wanted to volunteer to fight with Russia-backed forces should be allowed to. Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said there were 16,000 volunteers in the Middle East ready to fight alongside Russia-backed forces. US officials said these could include Syrians skilled in urban combat. Moscow is a long-standing ally of Syria and Mr Putin has been a key backer of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the country’s civil war. “If you see…
