A top investigator with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on June 24, 2017 escaped death by the whiskers when gunmen opened fire on him in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. No fewer than 887 Nigerian refugees in Cameroon have been repatriated following request from the Cameroonian government to Nigeria to facilitate their return. Mr Hanson Tamfu, the External Relations Officer, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Nigeria, said on Wednesday in Abuja that the returnees have arrived in Banki, Nigeria’s border town with Cameroon. President Trump’s brand will no longer tower over Toronto. Under a deal announced Tuesday, the new owner of the 65-story Trump International Hotel and Tower, which fell into receivership last year and became the scene of occasional anti-Trump protests, will erase the president’s name from the building. In a statement, the new owner, JCF Capital, said it had reached an agreement to end the Trump Organization’s contract to manage the hotel and condominium complex. Michael Bond, the creator of beloved children’s character Paddington Bear, has died at the age of 91. He died at his home on Tuesday following a short illness, a statement from his publisher Harper Collins said. Bond published his first book, A Bear Called Paddington, in 1958. The character, a marmalade-loving bear from “deepest, darkest Peru” who comes to live in London, went on to inspire a series of books, an animated TV series and a successful 2014 film. Former Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin is suing the New York Times for accusing her of incitement in a mass shooting. In the defamation case, Mrs Palin says the newspaper published a statement about her that it “knew to be false”. A 14 June editorial appeared to tie Mrs Palin to a 2011 shooting spree that left congresswoman Gabby Giffords seriously wounded and six others dead. Mrs Palin is reportedly seeking more than $75,000 (£58,000) in damages. The Federal High Court, Abuja, on Wednesday chided the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), over its conduct in the prosecution of former Interior Minister, Abba Moro, describing it as “sloppy prosecution.” Moro is being prosecuted alongside a former Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Anastasia Daniel-Nwobia, and a Deputy Director in the ministry, F. O. Alayebami, over alleged N676 million recruitment fraud. Others being tried with Moro are one Mahmood Ahmadu, who is at large, and Drexel Tech Nigeria Limited, the firm that handled the Nigerian Immigration Service, (NIS) recruitment in 2014. Pirate attacks in the coast of Nigeria, reduced significantly in the first half of 2017 following some measures adopted by the Federal Government, the Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali has said. Dan-Ali disclosed this in Rome, Wednesday at the conclusion of a two-day meeting of representatives of Government of G7++ Friends of Gulf of Guinea and representatives of Gulf of Guinea States.
