Scores of Rohingya refugees in the UK and US have sued Facebook, accusing the social media giant of allowing hate speech against them to spread. They are demanding more than $150bn (£113bn) in compensation, claiming Facebook’s platforms promoted violence against the persecuted minority. An estimated 10,000 Rohingya Muslims were killed during a military crackdown in Buddhist-majority Myanmar in 2017. Facebook, now called Meta, did not immediately respond to the allegations. The United States has announced a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in China. The White House said no official delegation would be sent to the games because of concerns about China’s human rights record. But it said US athletes could attend the games and would have the government’s full support. China has previously said it will take “resolute counter-measures” in the event of a boycott. Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, has adjourned the trial of one Ibrahim Kuforiji, Mojeed Raheem and Oladepo Habeeb for an alleged N125million fraud till January 27, 2022. The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan said on Monday that the National Assembly will provide resources in 2022 budget for the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic but will insist on prudence in the use of the funds. The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has suspended its industrial action that led to the outage of electricity in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja and other states like Nasarawa, Kaduna, Kogi, Niger and part of Edo state.
