US President Donald Trump has said quarantining New York “will not be necessary”, after the state’s governor said doing so would be “preposterous”. Mr Trump said the latest decision was taken on the recommendation of the White House Coronavirus Task Force. Elite football in England has been suspended until at least 30 April because of the spread of Covid-19. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has announced eight new cases of coronavirus in Nigeria. The new cases were announced late Saturday night taking the total number of confirmed cases to 97. “Eight new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Nigeria; two in FCT, four in Oyo, one in Kaduna and one in Osun State. “As at 10:40 pm 28th March there are 97 confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported in Nigeria with 1 death.” Chronicle NG had earlier reported that the governor of Kaduna state, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai had tested positive for coronavirus.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin says the current football season could be lost if it cannot be restarted by the end of June. Most leagues in Europe are suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic, with this summer’s Euro 2020 tournament postponed for another year. US President Donald Trump has said he is considering imposing a quarantine on New York in a bid to slow the spread of the coronavirus. “We’d like to see [it] quarantined because it’s a hotspot,” he told reporters. “I’m thinking about that.” He spoke as confirmed cases in the state increased to more than 52,000, around half of the total in the US. The number of people to have died with the coronavirus in the UK has reached 1,019. The latest government figures on Saturday showed there were another 260 deaths in the UK in a day, up from 759 on Friday. There are now 17,089 confirmed cases in the UK. It comes as the government said it was ramping up testing for frontline hospital staff who have symptoms, or who live with people who have symptoms.
