The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday extended its six-month after a meeting by its National Executive Council.
ASUU has announced on Sunday that it will consider whether to suspend or continue the strike that has kept public university students at home for six months.
In a tweet on its official account, the union said, “The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Academic Staff Union of Universities) will be meeting in the coming hours.
“The considerations are whether to suspend or continue with its six-month-old industrial action.”
Chronicle NG reports that the outcome of the NEC meeting has resulted in continuation of the strike.
Chronicle Ng had reported last week that the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu said President Muhammadu Buhari rejected ASUU’s demand that they must be paid their six-month salaries before they can call off the strike.
He also claimed that ASUU’s insistence on being paid their six-month salary has stalled negotiations between both parties.
Adamu stated this during the weekly ministerial briefing organised by the presidential communications team at the Presidential Villa.
“All contentious issues between the government and ASUU had been settled except the quest for members’ salaries for the period of strike, a demand that Buhari has flatly rejected,” he said.
The minister said the president’s position had been communicated to the lecturers who are expected to call off the strike.
He stated that the rejection was to curb the excesses of trade unions that want to be paid for work not done.
