Arsenal ensured that Liverpool would not win the Premier League title on Sunday by cruising to a 4-0 victory against 10-man Ipswich.

Liverpool needed an Arsenal defeat and a win over Leicester later on Sunday to secure their record-tying 20th English Premier League title.

Defeat effectively destroys Ipswich’s chances of retaining their Premier League status since they are 15 points behind safety with five games remaining and have a substantially worse goal difference than West Ham.

Following a stunning victory over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu to reach the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 2009, Arsenal cruised towards a return to European football’s top competition next season.

Mikel Arteta made only three changes from Wednesday’s 2-1 victory in the Spanish capital and was rewarded with a strong performance that ended the game in under half an hour.

One of Arteta’s recalled players, Leandro Trossard, opened the scoring with his ninth goal of the season.

A flowing play saw Mikel Merino tip Bukayo Saka’s cross into the path of Gabriel Martinelli, who scored to extend Arsenal’s lead.

Moments later, Saka was down by an appalling challenge from Leif Davis, who received a straight red card.

Saka evaded major injury, much to the joy of Arsenal fans, and the visitors should have extended their lead with two excellent chances before halftime.

However, the England international, who had just recently returned from a four-month hiatus due to a hamstring injury, was replaced early in the second half to minimise further risk.

Trossard added his second from a well-worked corner, and Ethan Nwaneri’s deflected attempt completed the scoring.
