The Nigerian Army has rescued 31 worshippers abducted during an Easter church service attack in Ariko village, Kaduna state.

The incident occurred on Sunday when suspected terrorists stormed an ECWA church during Easter celebrations, abducting dozens of congregants.

In a statement, the army said troops responded swiftly after receiving a distress call from the community.

Soldiers, working closely with local residents, tracked the attackers into nearby bush paths and engaged them in a fierce gun battle.

According to the army, the troops overpowered the assailants, forcing them to abandon 31 hostages.

One of the rescued victims sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.

A local councillor, Mark Bawa, confirmed that the attackers arrived in large numbers and operated for nearly an hour before fleeing.

However, the rescue came with a grim discovery.

Troops recovered the bodies of five victims killed by the attackers before their escape.

The army added that signs of blood along escape routes suggest the fleeing terrorists suffered heavy casualties during the confrontation.

Security forces have now intensified operations in the area, deploying additional troops to track down the attackers and rescue any remaining captives.

Authorities say the reinforced presence is aimed at preventing further attacks and restoring calm to the community.
