Nigerian politician and activist Aisha Yesufu has criticised Hisbah over the arrest and detention of a journalist in Katsina State.

Following the arrest of Jamal Mabai, a journalist investigating the murder of a wedding attendee, Yesufu, in a statement on Wednesday, berated the religious body for being “a menace.”

Jamil Mabai, a freelancer, was reportedly arrested by the operatives of the morality police during his investigation of the death of a wedding guest who died on Friday.

Mallam Gambo, the wedding attendee, died from gunshot wounds when operatives of Hisbah dispersed wedding guests at a wedding on Friday in enforcement of the ban on disc jockeys (Djs) in the state.

The gunshots, according to Mabai, were fired by operatives of the “Community Watch Corps tasked with defending communities against bandits.”

Mabai had gone to investigate Gambo’s death when he was apprehended and locked up by the operatives.

This was revealed by Mabai in a statement on his verified X page on Wednesday.

Speaking on his arrest, Yesufu noted that politicians use Hisbah to use political Sharia to subjugate the people.

She lamented that the weaponization of religion has made the Board a “menace” in society.

Yesufu’s statement reads, “Hisbah is a menace that has been given unfettered power because politicians in power want to use political sharia to continue to subjugate the people. They have weaponized religion.”
