Nigeria’s Blessing Oborududu has won a silver medal in the women’s 68kg freestyle at the Tokyo Olympic Games after losing to Tamyra Marianna Stock Mensah of the United States of America in the final.

A dominant first period from the 2019 world champion in which she scored four technical points which means Mensah becomes just the second woman from the United States to win an Olympic wrestling gold medal – and on her Olympic debut no less!

She defeated Oborududu 4-1, with Oborududu becoming the first athlete representing Nigeria to win an Olympic medal in wrestling.

Oborududu’s medal is Nigeria’s second at the Tokyo Olympics after Ese Brume won a bronze in high jump for the west African country.

    • Tokyo Olympics: Blessing Oborududu reaches final, guarantees Nigeria of medal

Blessing Oborududu has won a gold medal at the African Wrestling Championships every year for the last 11 years, except for 2012 when she did not enter due to competing in the 2012 Summer Olympics.

She competed in the freestyle 63 kg event at the 2012 Summer Olympics and was eliminated in the 1/8 finals by Monika Michalik.

She won the bronze medal in the women’s middleweight at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. She beat Chloe Spiteri in her bronze medal match.
