President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government’s anti-corruption fight is losing steam, laments a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State and a youth advocate, Engr. Nwabueze Onwuneme.

To reverse the trend, Onwuneme, a House of Assembly candidate in the last election, stressed the need for government officials, especially those in frontline anti-corruption agencies, to work in tandem with the zeal and dream of President Buhari so as to bequeath the nation a corrupt-free system. He said any official unwilling to key in with the president’s vision on anti-corruption should resign.

Onwuneme stated that “the betrayal of trust and abuse of office by some individuals are daily ridiculing the government of the day both locally and internationally. Disappointed observers of the attitude of some officials are now making a huge joke of the President’s anti-corruption stance and mantra, which is unacceptable,” he said.

In a press release made available to media houses on Saturday, Onwuneme particularly called on the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN), “to, as a matter of urgent public importance, resume the trial of all the outstanding high profile corrupt cases with the EFCC and ICPC, especially that of former governors who were alleged to have looted their state’s treasuries during their tenures.”

The current attitude of the officials, he said, “is selective and one of the factors that triggered the #EndSARS protest that ravaged the entire nation just of recent.”

Onwuneme stated that the unserious handling of some of the corruption cases, mostly against some former state governors, has become a source of international embarrassment to the Buhari administration which prides itself as anti-corruption crusader.

He said the fight against corruption seems to have been left solely for President Buhari who cannot do it alone.
