In what appeared to many as a national joke, the frontline members of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the Senate on Wednesday made an open overture to the deputy Senate President, Dr. Ike Ekweremadu to cross over to their party.

While moving the motion to adopt the votes and proceedings for the Tuesday 10th January 2017 legislative day, the Senator representing Zamfara Central, Kabir Garba Marafa said it was high time the deputy Senate President crossed the carpet to the ruling party.

Senator Abdullahi Adamu (Nasarawa West) while seconding the motion, also stressed the need for Senator Ekweremadu to decamp to the APC.

In a swift reaction, the Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriation and Senator representing Ebonyi South, Sonni Ogbuoji (PDP) said such a joke was uncalled for and that the deputy Senate President was not done with the PDP yet.

While ruling on the motion, the deputy Senate President who presided over the plenary pulled the question that the votes and proceedings for the previous legislative day be adopted while the second clause which was related to the overture from the APC “be dully removed”.

The entire Senate voted in affirmative to the views of Nigerians.

It could be recalled that Senator Ike Ekweremadu was elected under the umbrella of the PDP in 2015, to represent the people of Enugu West and he later emerged the deputy Senate President of the 8th Assembly in an overwhelming election.

Ekweremadu was also the deputy Senate President of the 6th and 7th Senate under the leadership of Distinguished Senator David Mark.
