The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) had a lot to do as Fernando Llorente scored a crucial away goal to help Tottenham beat Manchester City 4-4 on aggregate.

Tottenham took a 1-0 win into the second leg of their quarter final match against league champions, City.

It was City who drew the first blood after English forward Raheem Sterling scored in the fourth minute but two goals in the seventh and 10th minute from Heung-Min Son put Spurs back in the driving seat.

Spurs who were without injured England striker Harry Kane then conceded two goals in the first half with Bernando Silva and Sterling scoring again.

When Sergio Aguero scored in the 59th minute, City appeared to be running away with it but second half substitute, Llorente had other ideas.

The Spainards goal was a contentious one and the referee had to rely on VAR to award it.

But Manchester City weren’t so lucky with VAR as Sterling’s goal was ruled out late on.
