Former Nigeria Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala running to become the next World Bank President after Jim Yong Kim stepped down.

Speaking to CNN’s Richard Quest on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, she said, “If the right person were to nominate, and if the circumstances are right and if people feel that I can do the job, yes.”

Okonjo-Iweala would be the first female and African to World Bank since it was established 73 years ago.

Okonjo-Iweala served as Finance Minister during Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan administrations.

She also worked at the World Bank for 25 years, where she rose to the position of a Managing Director, (Operations).

She sits on the boards of Standard Chartered Bank, Twitter, Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization and the African Risk Capacity.

She will have to contend with favourites Heidi Cruz and Mohamed Aly El-Erian an Egyptian American businessman. He is chief economic adviser at Allianz.

President Donald Trump interviewed Cruz, the wife of Sen. Ted Cruz, for the World Bank president job.

“It was an honor for Heidi to be considered by the Administration as a finalist for President of the World Bank,” Cruz spokeswoman Catherine Frazier said in a statement.
