DNA samples have been collected from late singer Mohbad and his son, Liam, under court supervision as the prolonged paternity dispute enters a crucial stage.
The exercise took place on Saturday, October 31, 2026, following a court order granting an application by the singer’s wife, Omowunmi Aloba, for a supervised DNA test to establish the child’s paternity.
According to The Guardian, the samples were collected from Mohbad’s remains and his son amid heightened security arrangements to prevent possible disturbances.
The paternity dispute initially gained public attention after Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, repeatedly questioned whether Liam was the late singer’s biological son and demanded a DNA test.
However, legal proceedings surrounding his request had experienced delays.
Following the approval of Omowunmi’s application, the court appointed a welfare officer to supervise the process and fixed October 31 for sample collection.
Samples taken to Lagos DNA centre
Samples were collected from Mohbad’s remains at Mainland General Hospital, popularly known as the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH), Yaba, Lagos.
They were subsequently transported under tight security to the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre, where Liam’s samples were also collected for forensic examination.
The exercise was conducted under strict court supervision, with a heavy security presence amid concerns over possible public disturbances.
Security was heightened following calls by Joseph Aloba to his online supporters for support and suggestions on social media that protests should be staged at the venue.
Mohbad’s family members present during exercise
Mohbad’s mother, Abosede, younger brother, Adura, and wife, Omowunmi, were present during the proceedings.
The exercise reportedly became emotional, particularly during the identification of the late singer’s body as part of the process.
Speaking after the exercise, the lawyer representing Omowunmi, Barrister Kabiru, said the date for releasing the DNA results had not been determined.
He explained that the parties would be formally notified through the court once the results became available.
The lawyer also commended the court and the Nigeria Police Force for their professionalism and effective security arrangements throughout the exercise.
The DNA sample collection marks a significant development in the paternity controversy that has generated widespread public debate since Mohbad died in September 2023.
Attention has now shifted to the forensic examination and eventual results, which are expected to provide scientific evidence to help the court determine Liam’s paternity.
