The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction of a former banker, Chukwuebuka Nweke, for fraud involving the unauthorised withdrawal of ₦1 million from a bank account.
Justice Ismail Ijelu of the Lagos State High Court convicted Nweke after a full trial, the EFCC said in a statement on Tuesday.
According to the commission, investigations revealed that Nweke accessed a desktop computer assigned to Emmanuella Anyanwu in June without lawful authority, facilitating the unauthorised withdrawal of ₦1 million from an account belonging to Leelee Dumbari and domiciled with one of the new-generation banks.
“The offence is contrary to Section 386(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011,” the EFCC stated.
Nweke pleaded not guilty to the charge, leading to a full trial.

During the proceedings, the prosecution counsel, M.K. Bashir, called five witnesses to establish the case against the defendant, while the defence called one witness, according to the EFCC.
Delivering judgment, Justice Ijelu found Nweke guilty as charged and ordered him to pay a fine of ₦1 million within 30 days.
The court ruled that failure to pay the fine within the stipulated period would result in Nweke being remanded in a correctional centre for six months.
