Gunmen killed two people at a mining site in the vicinity of Kuru Jenta, close to the border separating Kuru Jenta in Jos South Local Government Area from Heipang in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Community sources say the incident took place at roughly 11:30 pm on Friday, at a time when the victims were present at the mining site.
Weng Bulus, a member of the community that was affected, informed the press in Jos on Saturday that two individuals from Heipang District were shot in the course of the incident.
“Two persons from Heipang District were shot dead by suspected gunmen at the mining site around Kuru Jenta last night,” Bulus said.
He condemned the incident and cautioned residents against engaging in mining activities at night.
“The victims were at the mining site during the period of the curfew imposed by the state government. I want to urge residents to remain vigilant and avoid movements during restricted hours.
“Residents should not violate the curfew, particularly by engaging in night mining, as such movements could expose them to security risks,” Bulus said.
Rwang Tengwong, who is the spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders Association, also responded by denouncing the attack and urging security agencies to look into what happened.
“This killing is unfortunate. We condemn it in totality.
Tengwong stated, “We call on security operatives to investigate the killing, identify those responsible, and bring them to justice.”
Tengwong further warned residents, especially miners, not to carry out operations at night.
As of the time this report was filed, attempts to contact Alabo Alfred, the spokesman for the Plateau State Police Command, for confirmation of the incident were unsuccessful, since his phone was switched off.
