Harry Kane is adamant that England are not far off Spain’s level, even though they lost their Nations League meeting with the world champions.
At Wembley on Saturday, Thomas Tuchel’s team bounced back from Lamine Yamal’s second-minute goal to go in front at half-time, with Anthony Gordon and Kane getting on the scoresheet.
England skipper Kane could have made it 3-1, but he lost his footing as he took a penalty, which struck the crossbar.
Spain demonstrated their quality by responding, clinching a 3-2 win through Alex Baena’s equalizer and Mikel Oyarzabal’s decisive goal.
However, Kane firmly believes England did enough to show they are capable of competing with the holders of both the World Cup and the European Championship.
“I think we’re close, without a doubt,” he said. “I think anyone who watched that game will see that.
“They have the trophies to back it up, so until we do that, we can only use words. We have to show it on the pitch.”
England lost to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, and they were denied a final rematch at the World Cup after falling to Argentina in the semi-finals.
Kane is confident that England’s display against Spain on Saturday would have made an impression on the world champions.
“We showed a lot of good things on the pitch, but in the big moments, we didn’t quite have it,” the Bayern Munich striker said.
“But we’re top four in the world. We finished third in the World Cup, so without a doubt, we’re close, and I think they would have felt that out there today for sure.”
