Former Anambra State governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate for 2027, Peter Obi, has asked for an in-depth probe into the death of Kano-based social media pundit Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu.
Obi made the demand in a statement posted on his X account on Friday, condemning the murders and urging the Kano State Government and security authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Dan Shagamu was slain Monday night at his home in Gaida Quarters, Kumbotso Local Government Area, Kano State.
The Kano State Police Command announced that two individuals had been apprehended in connection with the incident.
According to authorities, the incident occurred about 11:30 p.m., when the Vigilante Group Commander in Gaida reported that unknown hoodlums had forced their way into Dan Shagamu’s home and attacked him with sharp instruments.
Police from the Kumbotso Division responded and transported the victim to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital in Kano, where he was pronounced dead by a medical doctor.
According to the command, the suspects are in custody and being interviewed, while forensic investigations are underway to determine the circumstances and motives behind the incident.
Responding to the incident, Obi stated that differences or criticism should not be used to excuse violence.
“I am deeply saddened by the killing of social media commentator Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu in his home in Kano.
“No disagreement, criticism, or neighborhood dispute can ever justify the taking of a human life.
“Those who speak up, express their opinions, or hold different views must not be made to live in fear,” Obi said.
Obi requested the Kano State Government and related security authorities to carry out a “thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation” into the occurrence.
He also urged all those guilty of the death to face justice, emphasizing that the Nigerian Constitution guarantees freedom of expression.
Obi offered his condolences to Dan Shagamu’s family, friends, coworkers, and followers, wishing him rest in peace.
The police had earlier assured residents that the probe would be carried to its logical conclusion and claimed the accused will be charged in court after the investigation.
