The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa (SLUK) branch, has declared a two-week warning strike from September 15, 2026, over unresolved issues with the Jigawa State Government.
The decision was reached at the union’s 54th Regular Congress Meeting held on Tuesday, September 8, at the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences of the university.
In a resolution issued after the meeting, the union said it was dissatisfied with the government’s latest offer following engagements between both parties.
ASUU-SLUK resolved to begin the strike at midnight on Tuesday, September 15, warning that the action could become indefinite if the government fails to address its concerns.
“Should the government’s response remain unsatisfactory after the initial warning strike, the Union may embark on a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike,” the resolution stated.
A major demand of the union is the exemption of Sule Lamido University from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Management System (IPPMS), which it described as ineffective for the institution.
The union also demanded the payment of outstanding promotion arrears owed to eligible staff since 2024.
On university funding, ASUU-SLUK expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s position on the two per cent Local Government Contribution to the university and called for a sustainable alternative source of funding for the other sister university.
The union also called for the prompt release of the approved 2024/2025 Earned Academic Allowance (EAA).
ASUU-SLUK has constituted a media team to engage the public and sensitise stakeholders about the issues behind the planned industrial action.
Despite declaring the strike, the union acknowledged the intervention of the government team and commended the prompt release of the approved 2024/2025 EAA.
It, however, appealed to relevant stakeholders to intervene and prevent disruption to academic activities at the university.
The latest decision follows an earlier two-week ultimatum issued by the university’s ASUU branch over the implementation of the 2025 ASUU-Federal Government agreement and outstanding entitlements.
Recent reports also indicate that the Jigawa State Government is willing to continue engaging the union in an effort to avert industrial action.
