President Bola Tinubu has ordered urgent intervention on the Benin-Agbor-Asaba road and the Ifaki-Kabba-Ado Ekiti road, following growing concerns over the worsening condition of the major routes.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, said the President’s directive followed reports of severe hardship faced by motorists, with some road users reportedly stranded for hours and, in some cases, days.
Umahi, in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Francis Nwaze, said Tinubu directed the Federal Ministry of Works to take immediate steps to restore movement along the affected roads.
“President Tinubu, GCFR, has directed the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently intervene and ensure that necessary corrective actions are taken to restore movement on the affected roads as quickly as possible,” Umahi said.
The minister said he had immediately activated machinery to implement the directive.
He directed the Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, to lead ministry officials to the Ifaki-Kabba-Ado Ekiti axis to assess the damage and begin urgent remedial work.
Officials were already on the ground by 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, to commence the intervention.
Meanwhile, Umahi travelled to Benin, Edo State, with members of the National Assembly Works Committees to coordinate a similar intervention on the Benin-Agbor-Asaba road.
The meeting in Benin is expected to involve representatives of the Edo and Delta state governments, as well as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), as stakeholders seek immediate solutions to the difficulties facing motorists on the strategic corridor.
Umahi also accepted responsibility for the situation and apologised to commuters who have endured lengthy delays and periods of being stranded.
He assured road users that the Federal Government’s response would not be limited to temporary relief, saying immediate measures would be combined with permanent solutions to restore the roads and improve their long-term reliability.
The Federal Government said it remains committed to implementing immediate corrective measures while pursuing lasting solutions to the road challenges.
