Georgina Rodríguez has revealed why she and Cristiano Ronaldo chose to marry in the living room of their home in Cascais, Portugal, rather than have a lavish ceremony.
Ronaldo and Rodríguez tied the knot on 11 August 2026, nearly a decade after they first met at a Gucci store in Madrid, where Rodríguez worked as a sales assistant.
The intimate ceremony was held at the couple’s summer home in the Portuguese coastal resort of Cascais, near Lisbon. Their five children and four witnesses were present.
Speaking to Vogue, Rodríguez said her idea of a dream wedding had changed as she grew older and built a family with Ronaldo.
“As a little girl, I envisioned the grandest castle, the most magnificent carriage, the longest gown and a crown adorned with diamonds,” she said.
However, she said she later came to value intimacy over extravagance.
“Now, I find myself saying: no. I desire something intimate, shared with my partner and our children, in the comfort of our home.”
Rodríguez explained that the couple already had access to luxury properties, islands, horses and cars, making a private family celebration more meaningful to them.
“We chose to hold the ceremony in our living room, the place where we share breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and where we experience our daily lives.”
She added that she wanted the couple’s children to remember the significance of the home and family moment decades later.
“In 30 years, I want our children to remember that something wonderful occurred at this table, the wedding vows of our parents.”
For the ceremony, Rodríguez wore a white silk Gucci skirt suit with satin shoes, while Ronaldo wore a light beige suit with custom loafers.
Gucci creative director Demna Gvasalia said the fashion house’s involvement was particularly meaningful because Rodríguez and Ronaldo first met at its Madrid store in 2016.
“It felt incredibly special to dress Georgina and Cristiano for this moment, knowing their love story began in a Gucci store in Madrid.”
Despite the intimate ceremony, Rodríguez said the couple plans to hold a larger celebration for relatives and friends in the future.
“In the future, we will have a big wedding, so we can celebrate with family and friends,” she said.
The couple made their relationship public in 2016 and became engaged in 2025. Rodríguez’s engagement ring was reported to feature an oval-shaped diamond weighing about 35 carats.
