The Kogi State Police Command has detained Jacob Irewa in connection with an alleged attempted culpable homicide involving his wife, Berida Irawo, at the Oworo Estate in Felele, Lokoja.
According to a statement made Sunday by the command’s spokesperson, ASP Salisu Afusat, the incident occurred on Friday, August 14, 2026.
“On Friday, 14th August 2026, at about 2030 hours, the B Division Surveillance Team, Felele, received a report of the incident and immediately mobilised to the scene, where the suspect was arrested.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the incident followed a domestic disagreement after the victim burnt some of the suspect’s clothes which she believed he was no longer using, without his permission.
“The suspect subsequently threatened her, fetched petrol from his motorcycle and proceeded to set her ablaze,” she said.
She stated that the victim survived the attack and was currently receiving treatment at Honey Gold Hospital, Felele.
According to her, “The suspect, in his statement to the Police, admitted to setting his wife ablaze. The Command has commenced a comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and gather further evidence.”
Meanwhile, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, the Commissioner of Police for Kogi State Command, denounced the event and emphasized the command’s zero tolerance for violence, particularly domestic violence.
He advised the public to seek legal measures of resolving personal conflicts and to avoid actions that risk lives.
He stated that after the investigation was completed, the suspect would be prosecuted in court.
“The Kogi State Police Command remains committed to protecting lives and property and ensuring that persons responsible for violent crimes are brought to justice,” the PPRO added.
