President Bola Tinubu has described Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election in the Osun State governorship race as proof that democracy would continue to thrive in Nigeria.
Tinubu said this in a statement made Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, following Adeleke’s victory in the August 15 election.
The president announced that he had called Adeleke to congratulate him on his triumph.
He noted that the outcome demonstrated the people of Osun’s trust in the governor.
“I called Governor Ademola Adeleke earlier today to congratulate him on his election victory in Osun State. His victory once again confirmed the confidence the people of Osun State have in him.
“I wish him great success as he prepares to lead the state for the next four years. Now that he has won, Governor Adeleke must unite the people of Osun State and rally them for growth, stability, and social and economic progress, regardless of the political choices they made at the election.
“I salute the courage and discipline displayed by other contestants in the election. Their participation deepened and enriched our country’s democratic culture. The outcome of the election reflects the will of the people and is a fitting assurance that democracy will continue to flourish in our land,” Tinubu said.
The president applauded the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies for a peaceful and transparent election that resulted in a clear winner.
Adeleke, the Accord Party candidate, was declared the winner at 7:24am on Sunday by the state returning officer, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, vice-chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti.
He received 511,067 votes, defeating his nearest opponent, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, who received 444,815 votes.
Adeleke won 19 of the state’s 30 local government districts, with Oyebamiji winning 11. Najeem Salaam, the African Democratic Congress candidate, finished third with 17,180 votes.
Adeleke’s victory earned his second term after being elected governor in 2022 on the Peoples Democratic Party platform before switching to the Accord Party for the 2026 election.
Earlier on Sunday, Adeleke praised Tinubu for calling to congratulate him on his victory and reaffirmed his support for the president’s second term in the 2027 presidential election, identifying him as an Osun State son.
