A lifelike sex doll was mistaken for human remains after it was found inside an abandoned suitcase in rural Australia, police said.
Two men were driving through the Australian countryside on Sunday when they discovered the suitcase, which appeared to contain human remains.
The discovery triggered a major police response, with a strike force of homicide detectives and forensic experts assembled to investigate what was initially treated as a possible murder.
However, forensic examinations soon revealed that the apparent remains were actually a lifelike sex doll, according to Australia’s public broadcaster ABC.
New South Wales Police Superintendent Linda Bradbury said the doll was realistic enough to initially be mistaken for a person.
“They were mistaken for a human originally,” Bradbury told reporters.
“They are very realistic in terms of looking like human remains.”
Police said the doll was dressed and had hair and a nose piercing, adding to the confusion.
The situation was further complicated by markings on the doll that resembled bruises and grazes, according to police.
“Investigations have concluded,” police said in a statement.
The discovery ultimately turned out to be a false alarm, bringing the unusual investigation to an end.
