Niger state residents protested on the ever-busy Mokwa-Bida highway, blocking the road over persistent banditry and kidnapping in the state.
The Mokwa-Bida highway is an important federal road corridor over 100 kilometres long, serving as a pivotal link for motorists travelling from the Southwest to the North.
A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, who was at the scene of the protest, reports that all entry points into Mokwa were blocked by the angry protesters.
It was gathered that many travellers had been stranded since Saturday night.
Saliu Mohammed, one of the Niger state protesters, stated that suspected bandits had recently abducted 15 inhabitants of the neighbourhood.
He said that security agencies had failed to rescue the victims.
Mohammed declared that the protest will continue until the victims are rescued.
Joy Amaechi, a passenger from Ilorin to Abuja, bemoaned that she had waited five hours at Mokwa with no solution in sight.
She pleaded for immediate government assistance to save the victims.
Henry Nwachuckwu, a driver for a famous mass transit company, claimed he arrived in Mokwa at around 7 a.m. on Sunday.
The demonstrators had yet to vacate the expressway at the time of filing this report.
