The minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has stated that Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara did no wrongdoing after reconciling with his political camp, claiming that “there is no sin in politics.”
Wike said Fubara’s decision to return to the political family that produced him was the right one, and it would boost attempts to rally support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
The minister addressed journalists on Tuesday following an inspection of ongoing roadwork around the Federal Capital Territory.
His words came only days after Fubara officially proclaimed support for Wike’s Rainbow Coalition, endorsed President Tinubu for a second term, and asked his supporters to join the coalition.
Wike denied rumors that Fubara had been forgiven for their long-running political battle.
“I don’t know what you mean by sin. In politics, there is no sin. If someone realizes they made a mistake and decides to correct it, there is nothing wrong with that. Politics is not a sin. What matters is recognizing that you were on the wrong path and making the right decision,” he said.
Wike recalls predicting Fubara’s return at his previous media interview, claiming the governor had no choice but to return to his political roots.
“I said during my last media chat that he had no other choice but to return to the same political family that produced him. I have now been informed that he has made that declaration publicly, and we welcome him. Our doors are open. Everyone is welcome for us to work together. There is no better alternative. We will all work together to move the state forward,” he said.
The FCT minister also stated that Fubara’s public declaration of reconciliation would boost President Tinubu’s re-election bid.
“He has publicly stated that he has returned to where he started, and we receive him with an open mind. There is nothing to hide. We will all work together to ensure that we deliver the votes President Tinubu needs for his re-election,” he said.
Fubara declared his return to Wike’s political family last week at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Rivien Medical Industry project in Rivers State’s Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
The governor expressed his support for the Rainbow Coalition, endorsed Tinubu for a second term, and asked his followers to support all coalition candidates, claiming that the state’s period of political warfare had ended and it was time to move on.
Speaking about infrastructure development in the FCT, Wike expressed satisfaction with the pace of work on the ISEX Road Corridor and the Apo-Karshi Road, stating that both projects were moving along as anticipated.
He stated that the contractor in charge of the ISEX Road had promised the administration that the project would be ready for commissioning in December if appropriate cash was given.
Wike stated that the administration was dedicated to completing inherited projects rather than abandoning them.
“Some people assume office and say they will only focus on projects they initiated. That is not leadership. Good leadership is continuing projects that are vital to the development of the city, projects that transform the landscape and improve the economy.
“We are pleased with the progress the contractors are making. It is now our responsibility to fulfill our own obligations so they can complete these projects on schedule,” he added.
