Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has congratulated the Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, on her election as the 33rd president of the Nigerian Bar Association, describing her appointment as a historic moment in the legal profession.
In a statement issued Monday, the governor stated that Badejo-Okusanya’s election as the NBA’s second female president was a result of her decades of dedication, professionalism, and commitment to the rule of law.
“Congratulations to Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, on her historic election as the president of the Nigerian Bar Association.
“Becoming only the second female president in the history of the NBA is no small feat and is a well-deserved milestone.
“Over the years, she has built a reputation for excellence, legal precision, and an enduring dedication to the rule of law.
“Her rise to the leadership of the bar reflects decades of hard work and relentless dedication to justice,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The governor characterized her triumph as a great occasion for the legal profession and an example to young women in Lagos and Nigeria who aspire to be leaders.
He believes that Badejo-Okusanya’s tenure will give imaginative leadership and advance the cause of justice in the country.
“I have full confidence that her tenure will bring visionary leadership and advance the cause of justice in our society.
“On behalf of the government and people of Lagos State, I wish her a successful and impactful term in office,” he added.
Badejo-Okusanya won the NBA’s 2026 national officers’ election with 12,317 votes, or 47.18 percent of the total votes cast, defeating her closest adversary, Lateef Akangbe, SAN, who received 7,934 votes, and Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN, who received 5,855 votes.
Badejo-Okusanya will succeed outgoing President Afam Osigwe, serving a two-year term from 2026 to 2028.
The first female NBA president was Priscilla Kuye, who oversaw the league from 1991 to 1992.
