Cristian Volpato, an Australian footballer, is being investigated after allegedly returning a positive roadside test for cocaine following two speeding accidents in Sydney.
According to New South Wales Police, the 22-year-old midfielder was stopped on the Anzac Bridge about 11:05 p.m. on Thursday after allegedly speeding between 86 and 94 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. A roadside breath test yielded negative results.
Volpato was stopped again around two hours later for allegedly driving at 109km/h in the same 60km/h zone.
According to BBC Sport, after the second check, he allegedly tested positive for cocaine via roadside oral fluid.
Authorities issued Volpato an infraction notice for speeding and banned his international driver’s license for six months, banning him from driving in New South Wales.
Police said an additional oral fluid sample was taken for laboratory analysis, and the investigation is ongoing.
Volpato represented Australia in the recent FIFA World Cup after switching allegiances from Italy earlier this year, and he currently plays for Italian Serie A club Sassuolo.
