The Police Command in Akwa Ibom State has apprehended four individuals in connection with the presumed mob killing of a 21-year-old named Emmanuel Effiong.
DSP Timfon John, the police public relations officer for the state, verified this in a statement made in Uyo on Friday.
She claims that the suspects killed the victim and discreetly buried his remains in a shallow grave.
She stated that the inquiry uncovered that the victim was supposedly charged with theft of chickens and eggs on April 19 from a poultry farm situated in the Mbak 4 Community within Uyo Local Government Area.
The police spokesperson stated that the victim was struck with sticks and machetes until his death.
She stated that an investigation started after reliable information was obtained, along with a viral video clip depicting the deceased being violently attacked by a group of people.
“In the disturbing footage, the victim was seen lying helpless in a pool of blood with his hands and legs tied before being dragged on the ground beside a white Mitsubishi pick-up van.
“Acting swiftly on the intelligence, operatives of the command began a painstaking investigation that led to the arrest of four principal suspects,” John said.
She mentioned that detectives also found key evidence related to the crime, including the Mitsubishi pick-up truck reportedly used during the incident.
The State Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, denounced the act, emphasizing that anyone caught for any suspected crime must be delivered to the police or other appropriate authorities for due procedure.
He stated that the command stayed steadfast in its dedication to safeguarding the sanctity of human life and maintaining the rule of law.
