Cristiano Ronaldo had his World Cup dream end in disappointment on Monday evening when a last-minute goal from Mikel Merino gave Spain a 1-0 win against Portugal in a dramatic Round of 16 match at Dallas Stadium.

The experienced forward, Cristiano Ronaldo, who many expected to be playing his last match in the tournament, was unable to spark a breakthrough as Portugal succumbed to a stoppage-time defeat.

Ronaldo spearheaded the attack with his typical fervor alongside João Félix and Bruno Fernandes, creating chances intermittently and bringing Spain’s goalkeeper Unai Simón into play during the first half.

However, the Spain national football team remained resolute, with Rodri supporting a structured defense that stifled Portugal’s offense for extended durations.

The game stayed closely fought all along, with limited obvious opportunities.

Portugal’s keeper Diogo Costa maintained his team’s chances by making vital saves, including a double save against Spain’s young forwards, while Ronaldo persisted in searching for opportunities that were infrequent.

A setback occurred when Nuno Mendes had to leave the field with a hamstring injury in the second half, disrupting Portugal’s rhythm as Spain steadily advanced in pursuit of a goal.

The crucial moment came in the opening minute of added time. A rapid free-kick surprised Portugal, as Ferran Torres played a pass into the area and Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino calmly slotted it past Costa to conclude the match.

The goal ignited enthusiastic celebrations from Spanish fans and left the Portuguese side in silence as Spain moved nearer to their first significant trophy in years.

Portugal exits the tournament after a strong performance, previously achieving a thrilling victory against Croatia in the Round of 32.

Spain, in the meantime, bolster their remarkable defensive record and progress to the quarter-finals with increasing confidence.
