Iran’s former supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, who ruled the country for nearly 37 years before being murdered by Israeli and US bombings on February 28, will be buried on July 9, state television announced on Saturday.
The burial in his hometown, the northeastern holy city of Mashhad, which was originally slated for March but was postponed due to the conflict, would be followed by three days of funeral festivities in the capital Tehran beginning July 4 and another in the holy city of Qom on July 7, according to reports.
The national funeral will begin on July 4, which coincides with the 250th anniversary of the United States’ independence.
Mojtaba Khamenei, Ali Khamenei’s son, took over as supreme leader in early March, becoming the third since the Islamic Republic was established in 1979.
Mojtaba Khamenei, who was wounded in the strikes that killed his father and countless other leaders, has not appeared in public since his appointment and communicates solely through remarks ascribed to him.
