Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo State, has restricted the operations of commercial motorcycles across the state between 10:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. as part of new measures aimed at strengthening security and improving traffic management.

The governor issued the directive on Friday while signing an executive order.

The restriction comes amid growing concerns over insecurity following the abduction of more than 40 parents and schoolchildren in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15. The victims have remained in captivity for 20 days.

Makinde said commercial motorcycle operators, popularly known as Okada riders, would no longer be allowed to operate during the seven-hour restriction period.

“With the signing of this executive order, we are also introducing additional measures to enhance security across our state,” he said.

“Consequently, the operations of commercial motorcycle operators, popularly known as Okada riders, will now be restricted between the hours of 10:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. throughout Oyo State.”

    • I’ll serve my generation till I breathe my last, says Makinde

Speaking on efforts to secure the release of the abducted schoolchildren and teachers, Makinde assured residents and affected families that the government had not relented.

“Every day they remain in captivity is a painful day for their families, their communities and all of us in Oyo State,” he said.

“I want to assure our people that efforts are ongoing around the clock, and the safe return of those abducted remains the top priority of this administration. They have not been forgotten, and they have not been abandoned.”

The governor said the government could not disclose details of ongoing rescue efforts because of the sensitive nature of the operations.

“We may not be able to disclose every step being taken because of the sensitive nature of the operations involved, but I ask our people not to mistake our silence for inaction. A great deal of work is being done behind the scenes, and we remain fully engaged with all relevant security agencies,” he said.

Makinde further urged residents to cooperate with security agencies, adding that public vigilance remains critical to tackling insecurity.

“We can make laws and regulations, but success ultimately depends on the cooperation of our people. This is another opportunity to remind us all that security is a shared responsibility. If you see something, say something, and authorities will do something,” he said.

He also reminded residents that the state’s toll-free emergency line, 615, remains available for reporting security incidents.
