The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has announced that all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State will begin an indefinite strike starting Monday, June 1, 2026.
The directive, issued by the union’s leadership, is meant to call for immediate government action to ensure the safe release of the victims, whose whereabouts are unknown.
According to a statement signed by NUT Oyo State Wing Chairman Hassan Fatai and Secretary Salami Olukayode, the abductees’ protracted incarceration has caused dread and concern among teachers, as well as a disruption in confidence in the school system.
According to the organization, the situation has discouraged parents from sending their children to school and increased tensions in affected neighborhoods.
The NUT claimed that the walkout is intended to bring the attention of government officials to the need for increased efforts to obtain the quick and unconditional release of the abducted teachers and students.
It asked teachers across the state to fully comply with the mandate, follow the law, and guarantee their safety while remaining away from classrooms during the industrial action.
The union also expressed solidarity with the abducted victims and their families, stating that it will continue to engage with relevant authorities until the afflicted individuals are safely rescued.
It reaffirmed its commitment to the well-being and security of teachers and students across the country, emphasizing that protecting school communities remains a priority.
