Barcelona thrash Lyon to win fourth Champions League title

Barcelona claimed their fourth Champions League title in six years as Ewa Pajor and Salma Paralluelo both netted two goals in the second half to dominate Lyon in the final held in Oslo.

Pajor ended the stalemate in the 55th minute when she seized a pass from Patri Guijarro and struck a low left-foot shot past Lyon goalkeeper Christiane Endler.

Poland forward Pajor increased the advantage for Pere Romeu’s team by finishing a cross from Paralluelo 14 minutes later.

Paralluelo’s powerful shot from outside the area in the 90th minute brought the score to 3-0 before Pajor assisted the Spain winger’s second goal in stoppage time, ensuring a great win.

The Spanish team made a strong comeback to the pinnacle of European football following last season’s unexpected loss to Arsenal in the Lisbon final.

However, it was not entirely easy for Barcelona, as their defensive weaknesses were exposed within 15 minutes when unmarked Lyon captain Wendie Renard compelled a save from Cata Coll before Lindsey Heaps scored from the rebound.

Barcelona were spared, however, as the goal was disallowed for offside after a video assistant referee check.
Endler quickly left her line to attempt to gather a through ball, and though Pajor sent her shot over the standing Lyon keeper, it missed the target.

Coll was once more needed later in the first half to deny Selma Bacha’s dangerous free-kick before Pajor seized control, scoring her 10th and 11th goals of the tournament, surpassing Arsenal’s Alessia Russo as the leading scorer.

Coll saved a low shot from Vicki Becho and prevented Tabitha Chawinga in a one-on-one before Paralluelo’s late brace made the score appear lopsided.

This marked the fourth encounter between Barcelona and Lyon in the Champions League final—and this time the Spanish team was up against someone who understands them better than many.

Lyon’s manager Jonatan Giraldez led the Catalans to European success in 2023 and 2024 but now faced his previous assistant Romeu.

Pajor once more demonstrated her impact on the grand stage with a precise brace, while 22-year-old Paralluelo’s late goals highlighted her increasing significance in this team.

There is, nevertheless, a season of transformation approaching.

Two-time Ballon d’Or recipient and captain Alexia Putellas—who received a round of applause when substituted four minutes before the end—along with Mapi Leon, Ona Batlle, and Caroline Graham Hansen all have deals that expire at the close of this season.

Should this be their last season with the club, they will have exited in style with a trophy quadruple.

Barcelona, after securing their seventh straight Liga F title and winning the Spanish Supercopa in January, added the Copa de la Reina to their collection last weekend with a 3-1 win over Atletico Madrid.

By winning the club game’s biggest prize by defeating Lyon, they completed the clean sweep for the first time since the 2023-24 season.
