The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has visited Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State following Friday’s deadly attack and abduction of pupils, teachers and residents in communities within the council.
The visit comes amid heightened tension after gunmen invaded schools in the Ahoro-Esinle axis, killing a teacher and abducting several pupils and education workers.
During the visit, Disu expressed concern over the incident and extended condolences to families of those killed in the attack.
The IGP was accompanied by Ojo Adekimi, commissioner of police for Kwara State, due to the proximity of the affected communities to the Oyo-Kwara border. Also on the visit was Abayomi Shogunle.
Disu also met with Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga and other security stakeholders to receive operational briefings on rescue efforts and security deployments across the affected communities.
The IGP assured residents, parents and guardians that the Nigeria Police Force, alongside other security agencies, had intensified coordinated search-and-rescue operations to secure the release of all abducted victims.
He said intelligence gathering, tactical deployments and security operations had been strengthened across the affected communities and neighbouring forests to track down the abductors and restore calm.
Disu described the attack as “cruel, condemnable and unacceptable”, adding that security agencies would spare no effort in bringing those responsible to justice.
He also ordered the deployment of additional tactical and intelligence assets to reinforce ongoing operations in the area.
