A civil society group, Nigeria Democratic Rights Advocacy (NDRA), has raised alarm over an alleged breach of Nigeria’s amended Electoral Act, warning against dual political party membership.

In a statement issued on Sunday, NDRA said it uncovered “disturbing inconsistencies” in party records involving Reuben Egwuaba. The records reportedly list him as National Legal Adviser in both the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), with one entry said to be backed by a court order.

The statement, signed by General Secretary Julius Aondowase, described the situation as more than an administrative error, warning of serious constitutional implications.

    Electoral Act provisions cited

NDRA pointed to Section 77 of the amended Electoral Act, which prohibits membership of more than one political party at the same time.

According to the group, anyone found guilty of dual membership risks a fine of up to ₦10 million or a prison term of up to two years, or both.

It stressed that the role of National Legal Adviser is a key position within a party’s National Executive Committee, requiring exclusive allegiance.

    Call for investigation and clarification

The organisation called for urgent clarification from all parties involved, insisting the issue must not be ignored.

NDRA said if the records are accurate, they represent a clear violation of the law. If not, it demanded immediate correction and a full explanation for the conflicting documentation.

It also urged electoral authorities to launch a prompt investigation and take necessary action.

“The rule of law must be upheld without exception,” the group stated, adding that Nigeria’s democracy must be guided by established legal frameworks rather than political convenience.
