The United Bank for Africa (UBA) Group has debunked social media posts alleging that Tony Elumelu, its group chairman, divorced his wife, Awele.
In a statement on Sunday, Alero Ladipo, group head of brand, marketing, and corporate communications, said the claims are entirely fabricated, reckless, and without basis.
“The claims are a deliberate falsehood designed to mislead the public and cause reputational harm,” the statement reads.
Ladipo said the matter has been referred to relevant law enforcement authorities, who have commenced action.
She added that three individuals directly connected to the creation and dissemination of the false posts have been arrested: Kingsley Akunemeihe (@Directorkem), Chigozie Success Ihebom, and John Surpruchi Nwanorue (@problemchimky).
“Investigations are ongoing and are expected to lead to further arrests and prosecutions of all persons involved in originating, amplifying, or sustaining this defamatory campaign,” the statement added.
Ladipo said the statement serves as a formal notice to all individuals, platforms, and entities involved in publishing, reposting, or continuing to disseminate the content to immediately cease and desist.
She directed such parties to remove the offending publication from all platforms immediately, refrain from any further publication or amplification of similar false content, and preserve all records, including digital footprints, communications, and metadata relating to the creation and dissemination of the publication, pending further legal action.
“Failure to comply will result in the initiation of legal proceedings, including claims for defamation, injunctive relief, damages, and any other remedies available under applicable law,” the statement reads.
The statement added that the UBA Group remains resolute in protecting the reputation and integrity of its brand and will pursue all necessary legal avenues to ensure that all perpetrators are identified and held accountable.
On Saturday, Dangote Group also debunked viral posts alleging that Aliko Dangote, the company’s founder, had a fallout with Elumelu.
Anthony Chiejina, group chief branding and communications officer for Dangote Group, assured that legal action would be taken against those behind the post.
