Kwankwaso denies Obi ticket talks, begins fresh political consultations

Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Kano governor has moved to calm rising political speculation, insisting no decision has been made about his next move ahead of the 2027 elections.

The former Kano governor revealed he has begun “wide-ranging consultations” following the Supreme Court of Nigeria ruling that deepened the leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In recent weeks, Kwankwaso has been linked with a potential presidential ticket alongside Peter Obi. The speculation gained momentum after opposition figures met in Ibadan and supporters circulated joint campaign posters online.

There were also reports suggesting both politicians were preparing to dump the ADC for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Kwankwaso, however, shut down the claims.

He said clearly that neither he nor his allies have taken any final position on his political future, describing the reports as “premature and unfounded”.

    ADC crisis fuels uncertainty

The uncertainty follows a major court decision that has thrown the ADC into turmoil. The Supreme Court nullified an earlier ruling by the Court of Appeal and ordered factions within the party to return to the Federal High Court for proper resolution.

The panel, led by Mohammed Garba, effectively reopened the leadership dispute, leaving the party in what Kwankwaso described as a “precarious position”.

He noted that the ADC has not zoned its presidential ticket or endorsed any candidate — a key factor behind the growing tension.

    Consultations across parties underway

Kwankwaso confirmed he is engaging with multiple political stakeholders, including figures in the NDC and the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), to determine the best path forward.

According to him, the consultations are aimed at safeguarding democratic interests after repeated legal setbacks in party politics.

He referenced his earlier exit from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), which he said was driven by “externally influenced legal problems”.

Addressing his recent absence from ADC meetings, Kwankwaso clarified it was due to personal commitments not an indication of an imminent defection.

He assured supporters that any major political decision would be officially communicated at the appropriate time.
