Trump renames Strait of Hormuz ‘Strait of Trump’

US President Donald Trump has sparked more controversy by appearing to support a proposal to rename the Strait of Hormuz the “Strait of Trump,” boosting the concept with a reshared post on Truth Social on Wednesday.

Given the Strait’s worldwide significance, the post received a lot of attention and included a map designating the narrow but strategically important waterway with the new name.

The route, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, is a vital artery for international oil shipments, carrying a significant amount of the world’s petroleum supply on a daily basis.

While the act looks purely symbolic, it comes at a time of increased geopolitical tension between the United States and Iran.

The Strait has historically been a source of contention in bilateral ties, frequently serving as the focal point of debates over security, sanctions, and freedom of navigation.

Trump’s reshared statement also echoes previous remarks in which he teased at renaming the waterway, which was widely interpreted as provocative rather than an official policy endeavor.

Long-standing rules and global recognition control international waterways like the Strait of Hormuz, making unilateral renaming virtually impossible.

The timing of the message has increased market worries as oil prices have risen, raising concerns about potential supply interruptions, with Brent crude reaching its highest level in years amid uncertainty surrounding the Strait.

According to the Economic Times, oil prices climbed on Thursday as concerns grew over a prolonged US blockade on Iranian exports and stalled nuclear negotiations, raising the prospect of tighter global supplies.

Brent crude reached its highest level since mid-2022, as concerns over the Iran issue continued to impede flows through the Strait of Hormuz.

The rise followed an Axios story that Trump rejected Iran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, implying that the blockade may continue until a larger nuclear agreement is completed.
