At least 21 people have been killed in a fresh terrorists attack on Bunkasau village in Bukkuyum Local Government Area, deepening fears over worsening insecurity in Zamfara State.

Residents said heavily armed assailants stormed the community late Friday night, riding on motorcycles and shooting indiscriminately at villagers.

The terrorists reportedly abducted several residents, mostly women and children, and made away with livestock during the raid.

A local resident, who spoke to reporters, described the aftermath as devastating, saying many victims were discovered on Saturday morning.

“It’s unfortunate. We woke up to find many people dead. At least 21 have been confirmed, while several others are still missing after fleeing during the attack,” the resident said.

The victims were later buried in a mass funeral held in a neighbouring community.

The source appealed to both state and federal authorities to urgently strengthen security in the area to prevent further attacks.

“We are pleading with the government to deploy more troops. Our communities are no longer safe,” he added.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Yazid Abubakar, said security personnel had been deployed to the area.

He noted that while the exact number of casualties was yet to be officially verified, normalcy had been restored following the intervention of security operatives.

The latest assault adds to a growing list of deadly attacks in Zamfara, where rural communities continue to face repeated raids by terrorists.
